entertaining storytimes with spirit!

This week my theme for storytime was naughty kitties. I started with a flannel based on the story Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward – one of my favorite books that is sadly out of print. I also created this quick flannel to go with the theme and to use with either a cat or a pet themes.

(sung to the tune of BINGO)

There was a girl who had a cat and Kitty was her name-o
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y
and Kitty was her name-o

(remove a letter and substitute a clap, I make a big deal about removing the letter having the kids wave and say “Goodbye K!”)

I cut the letters out using the ellison press and did a Google search for “cat clipart.” I did a little dance when the Hello Kitty reading a book image popped up. It served as the perfect template. First I traced the basic shape in white and then layered the red for her clothes, bow and sparkly blue book. Then I outlined the entire image using fabric paint. I was so happy with how she turned out that I made 5 Ballerina Kitties for a dance theme (they will appear in next week’s Flannel Friday).

Books used with naughty kitty theme:
Cat Secrets by Jef Czekaj
There are Cats in this Book by Viviane Schwarz
Feathers for Lunch by Lois Elhert
Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
Bad Kitty by Nick Bruel
